Magical Lower Silesia

Magical Lower Silesia

Magical Lower Silesia is  the only workshop we offer that is not directly about historical photographic methods. It is just that we couldn’t pass up on an opportunity to offer a photographic experience as unique as this one. Lower Silesia – a magical place, full of mysteries and unbelievable history. It is probably the richest region in Poland when it comes to both enchanting landscapes and historical monuments. A place where the golden train was hidden, where miles of underground tunels were dug, where the treasures of Warsaw, Cracow, Poznań and other Polish cities where hidden. Treasures still undiscovered. Lower Silesia is the land over which the Śnieżka mountain with its mythical Karkonosz towers, the land of the magnificient Książ Castle with the ghost of Princess Daisy von Pless who still guards the place where her necklace of pearls is hidden. Lower Silesia is the land of gothic churches, medieval castles, baroque palaces. It is the Polish counterpart of the Loara Valley, none the poorer when it comes to the amount of magnificient architecture. Lower Silesia is the place which just must be photographed in order to document, preserve the beauty of its architecture, often on the way to being irretrievalby lost. Lower Silesia is a special place, a region where the cosmopolitan Wrocław  stands next to the post mining town of Wałbrzych with the only church made of cork in Europe. A land of the Owl Mountains full of WW2 mysteries and the Kłodzko Valley with the oldest stone bridge in Poland (in Kłodzko) and of the spas with tasty mineral waters. A land of the Table Mountains where...
Pictorial photography – oilprint

Pictorial photography – oilprint

If you have had enough of typical courses with participants diligently copying negatives previously prepared by the tutor and all leaving the workshop with identical pictures that are not really theirs; if you don’t want to go for a course lasting from 10a.m. till 6 p.m. where the cleaning lady pointedly enters the room half an hour before the end, we have a perfect offer for you. What we invite you to take part in is a four day long oilprinting field workshop entirely devoted to oilprinting, during which you will take your own photographs which you will copy, with the assistance of an experienced instructor, as oilprints at the same time learning the secrets of the oilprinting technique and creating unique prints. The fact, that the workshop lasts four days means that participants will not only have an opportunity to acquaint themselves with the technique, but will really be able to get practice and confidence with the technique; something that is priceless with manipulative techniques such as oilprinting. Constant assistance of the instructor means that errors will be noticed and corrected instantly. Oilprint is one of the most important alternative processes, popular especially with the great pictorial photographers. It allows unrivalled manual control over the final appearance of the print combined with a wonderful rendition of details. Experience acquired with oil printing will also prove priceless when you try the sister process of bromoil. We will begin the workshop by learning how to prepare our own materials, especially the papers which will later be used to create the prints. After all, being able to prepare your materials well is one...
Wetplate travels

Wetplate travels

Ambrotype travels is the only opportunity of its kind not only to learn the secrets of ambrotype, but also to gain real practive in the field. Ambrotype is one of the oldest and most beautiful photographic techniques allowing the photographers to take unique images on glass. Unfortunately, due to technical constraints connected with collodion wetplate photography, most workshops are tied to studios and photographic darkrooms thus limiting both the available photographic subjects and potential for creation. The field workshop we have prepared is different than any other. Rather than offer a stationary course held in a school, club or guest house, we invite you to participate in a unique travelling wetplate field workshop; a one of its kind opportunity to get field practice and build a varied portfolio in one go. As we will not be limited to staying in one place, close to a traditional darkroom, there will be nothing to stop us from following our fascination and choosing photographic subjects and locations, though this will, of necessity, be built around the original plan of the workshop. In order to ensure the biggest possible variety of photographic subjects the workshop is held on the beautiful Polish coast, in an area combining coastal landscapes, urban architecture and amazing medieval castles. There will also be professional models with 19th century style clothes and professional make up. The maximum number of participants for each workshop is just four. We put at your disposal two mobile darkrooms; one in the shape of an adapted van, and the other, a more traditional portable one so as to enable unlimited freedom of taking pictures....
Pictorial photography – gumprint

Pictorial photography – gumprint

Pictorial photography – gumprint is one of the richest, most complete gumprinting workshops covering all key aspects of both monochromatic and colour gumprintng. Despite the fact over a hundred years have passed since its hayday, pictorial photography is still immensely popular. Pictorial pictures are delicate, romantic with this unmistakeable note of dreaminess and nostalgy. Many photographers, more or less consciously, try to stay within pictorial aesthetics, whether their photography is digital or classical, as this often leads to the creation of interesting photographs. Unfortunately, digitally made pictorial photographs hardly ever can match up to the original work of masters, at least partly due to the limitations of the technique itself. Our seven day workshop will offer an opportunity to come closer to the original methods of the Old Masters as the pictures created during it will be made using similar equipment and  techniques. Unlike most workshops devoted to gumprinting, this is a complete course with intensive photographic practice and covering all issues connected with gumprinting. This means we will not only cover monochromatic gumprint but also full colour and combining gumprint with iron based processes. The programme of our seven-day workshop covers: an overview of the work of most important pictorialists/gumprinters, review/introduction of the most important pictorial techniques, especially gum bichromate, cyanotype combined with gumprint two photographic sessions combining elements of landscape and model photography with the sensual retro attire, preparing and printing digital large format negatives , preparing papers for gumprinting, practical work on making monochromatic picture; both single and multi-layered, learning to manipulate the gumprinted image, practical work on making full colour gumprints, making prints using the combination of...
